WELCOME AND NOTICES

GATHERING:
For most of us, life is a process of living out certain roles:
Student – parent – teacher – employee – boss.
But God calls we men and women, young and old,
to come out from behind roles and masks,
to live genuine lives of response to the challenges life presents;
to meet life head on and dare to be real people,
people of faith – lived – out.

HYMN: Tell Out, My Soul
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!
Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice;
tender to me the promise of his word;
in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name!
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age the same;
His holy Name – the Lord, the Mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might!
Powers and dominions lay their glory by.
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight,
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word!
Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure.
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
to children’s children and for evermore! © Timothy Dudley-Smith (WOV)

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN
SONG: Hello Everybody!
Hello everybody! How do you do? How do you do? How do you do?
Hello everybody! How do you do? God loves you today.

If your name is — clap now,
If your name is — clap now.
If your name is — clap now,
If your name is — clap now.
Hello everybody! …

If you have red on, clap now,
If you have blue on, clap now.
If you have green on, clap now,
If you have yellow on, clap now.
Hello everybody! …

If you like spaghetti, clap now,
If you like swimming, clap now.
If you like rainbows, clap now,
If you like biking, clap now.
Hello everybody! …

FAITH AND LIFE ~ with David Beaumont

HYMN: Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free.
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
wind, wind on the sea.
You moved on the waters,
you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep;
and over the ages you called to each thing,
wake from your slumbers
and rise on your wings.

You swept through the desert,
you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people
with a law and a land;
and when they were blinded
with their idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets
to open their eyes.

You sang in a stable,
you cried from a hill,
then you whispered in silence
when the whole world was still;
and down in the city
you called once again,
when you blew through your people
in the rush of the wind.

You call from tomorrow,
you break ancient schemes.
From the bondage of sorrow
the captives dream dreams;
our women see visions,
our men clear their eyes
with bold new decisions
your people arise. © Jim Manley (NJS)

THE OFFERING
Gracious and giving God, in this act of worship
we have brought gifts of money and food.
These are the tangible, touchable, countable tokens of our faith
and commitment.
We ask your blessing on them, and upon us,
that we your church may use them wisely and well,
in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love,
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you:
O Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul!

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there’s despair in life let me bring hope,
where there is darkness, only light,
and where there’s sadness, ever joy:
O Master, grant that I may never seek…

Make me a channel of your peace:
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
We come, a family of God’s people.
Some are younger, some older;
but all one family of faith gathered to worship God.
Some have walked to church, agile and free,
others have walked in more slowly, watching every step;
but all one family of faith gathered to worship God.
Some have known St Martin’s Parish for a long time;
others have worshipped in many places:
but all one family of faith gathered to worship God.
Some have journeyed the path of faith for long years;
others have more recently found the road to Christ:
but all one family of faith gathered to worship God.

HYMN: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation;
all ye who hear,
now to his temple draw near,
joining in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
shieldeth thee gently from harm, or when fainting sustaineth;
hast thou not seen
how thy heart’s wishes have been
granted in what he ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend thee;
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
sound from his people again:
gladly for aye we adore him. C/A

INTRODUCTION TO THE READINGS

READINGS: Hebrews 11: 1-3; 8-16 Fern Wakefield
Luke 12: 22-34 Bernie Brettell

SERMON: Can We Get a Mature View of Faith?

THE OFFERING
The gifts you bless, O God, enable each one of us to grow.
The gifts you bless, O God, enable us to support one another.
The gifts you bless, O God, enable our faith community to grow.
The gifts you bless, O God, enable the world-wide church to grow.
You bless them as we are encouraged,
you bless them as friendships deepen,
you bless them as our faith roots are nourished by your Word,
you bless them as we share with people whose names we will never know.
May your blessing go with us on our journey of faith, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

HYMN: For the Faithful Who Have Answered (Tune: Omni Die WOV 5)
For the faithful who have answered
when they heard your call to serve,
for the many ways you led them
testing will and stretching nerve.
For their work and for their witness
as they strove against the odds,
for their courage and obedience
we give thanks and praise, O God.

Many eyes have glimpsed the promise,
many hearts have yearned to see.
Many ears have heard you calling
us to greater liberty.
Some have fallen in the struggle,
others still are working on.
You are not ashamed to own us.
We give thanks and praise, O God.

For this cloud of faithful witness,
for the common life we share,
for the task of peace and justice,
for the gospel that we bear,
for the vision that our homeland
is your love – deep, high, and broad –
for the different roads we travel
we give thanks and praise, O God. ? GIA Publications (VU)

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: All My Hope on God is Founded (Tune: Groeswen)
All my hope on God is founded;
he doth still my trust renew.
Me through change and chance he guideth,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
he alone
calls my heart to be his own.

Human pride and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray his trust;
what with care and toil he buildeth,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power,
hour by hour,
is my temple and my tower.

Daily doth the almighty giver
bounteous gifts on us bestow;
his desire our soul delighteth,
pleasure leads us where we go.
Love doth stand
at his hand;
joy doth wait on his command.

God’s great goodness ay endureth,
deep his wisdom passing thought:
splendour, light and life attend him,
beauty springeth out of naught.
Evermore
from his store
new-born worlds rise and adore. C/A

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Holy God, we come to worship you.
We come to ask for bread that can nourish our spirits.
We come to ask for ease from those things that trouble or tempt us.
We come to offer our weakness, knowing you can turn it to strength. We come to celebrate your love for us, and to celebrate our love for you.

HYMN: In This Familiar Place
In this familiar place
I know the mystery of your grace.
For the love that I receive, for the truth that I believe,
I praise and thank you for this here and now.

In halting song and word
the music of your voice is heard.

Among these friends of mine
I taste the company divine.

Within this narrow sphere
I learn that you are everywhere. © Colin Gibson (AA)

OPENING PRAYERS

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

SONG: I am the Church
I am the church! You are the church!
We are the church together!
All who follow Jesus,
all around the world!
Yes, we’re the church together!

The church is not a building;
the church is not a steeple;
the church is not a resting place;
the church is a people.

We’re many kinds of people,
with many kinds of faces,
all colours and all ages, too
from all times and places.

Sometimes the church is marching;
sometimes it’s bravely burning,
sometimes it’s riding, sometimes hiding;
always it’s learning.

And when the people gather,
there’s singing and there’s praying;
there’s laughing and there’s crying sometimes,
all of it saying:

At Pentecost some people
received the Holy Spirit
and told the Good News through the world
to all who would hear it. © Hope Publishing (UMH)

A LITANY FOR TWO VOICES

THE LORD’S PRAYER – SUNG

SERMON: The Disciples’ Prayer

THE OFFERING
God, for the abundance of gifts that are ours, we give you thanks.
For the chance to send them out into the world and build your reign, we give you praise. For the mystery of how all of our gifts – whether time, love, effort, or treasure – make a difference to you and to this world, we say hallelujah! Amen.
HYMN: Every Day I will Offer You
Every day I will offer you,
loving God, my heart and mind,
every way I discover you
in the work your hand has signed;
help me see I’m your image, and
you have dreamed what I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will look to Christ,
and give thanks for wine and bread
through the pain and the emptiness
where your world cries to be fed;
help me see I can work for change,
and wherever I might be,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will take your word,
answer your compassion’s claim,
celebrate every sign of hope,
every deed done in your name;
help me see you are always there,
and your light can shine through me,
every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy! © Shirley Murray (AA)

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: O God of Bethel (Tune: WOV 49)
O God of Bethel, by whose hand
your people still are fed,
who through this earthly pilgrimage
have all your servants led.

Our vows, our prayers, we now present
before your throne of grace;
God of past ages, be the God
of each succeeding race.
Through each perplexing path of life
our wandering footsteps guide;
give us each day our daily bread,
and shelter fit provide.

O spread your covering wings around,
till all our wanderings cease,
and at our God’s beloved abode
our souls arrive in peace. (C/A)
