WELCOME

Today’s service is being taken by the Pathways Study Group with help from other people.

NOTICES & BIRTHDAYS

Come as the joyful, come as the eager, come as the thankful

Come as the recipients of amazing grace

The love of God overflows our hearts

The grace of Christ liberates our spirits

The joy of the Spirit sings in our minds

HYMN: Immortal Invisible God Only Wise (Tune: St Denio)

Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting,

thou rulest in might; thy justice like mountains high soaring above,

thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest,

the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on a tree,

and wither and perish: but nought changeth thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light, thine angels adore thee,

all veiling their sight; of all the rich graces this grace, Lord, impart – take the veil from our faces, the veil from our heart.

All laud we would render: O help us to see, tis only the splendor of light hideth thee; and so let thy glory, Almighty, impart through Christ in the story, thy Christ to the heart.                                                   W Smith (WOV80)

PRAYER:

What is the church? A place of Love and Kindness

Why do we meet? To seek the common Good.

Who are we? We are the Dreamers. We are the sad.

We are the joyous.

What do we do? We try to make the world a better place.

We know success. We know failure.

What is this church? A source of strength and renewal.

Why do we meet? To celebrate the best within us.

Who are we? The growing. The creative. The questioning.

What is this church? A place to see the light that shines forever

through the darkest night.

Our Father, you come to us with gracious and gentle touch.

To reveal and remove that which separates us from you.

Grant forgiveness for those things that spoil our being

and destroy our wholeness of spirit.

Grant us, that during the uncertain times we now face as a congregation we both know and accept the blessing of your “Shalom” your peace. In Jesus’ name we come.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree

HYMN: Thank You for Giving Me the Morning (MG Schneider  WOV 114)

Thank you for giving me the morning, thank you for every day that’s new, thank you for new things in store for me and for work to do.

Thank you for all my friends and brothers, thank you for everyone

that lives, thank you that even greatest enemies I can forgive.

Thank you for many little sorrows, thank you for every kindly word, thank you that in the midst of trouble sympathy is stirred.

Thank you, I see your word has meaning, thank you, I know your Spirit here, thank you, because you love all people, those both far and near.

Thank you, O Lord, for speaking to us, thank you for telling us you care, thank you, O Lord, you came among us bread and wine to share.

Thank you, O Lord, your love is boundless, thank you that I am full of you, thank you, you make me feel so glad and thankful as I do.

OLD TESTAMENT READING:  Ruth 3: 1-5 & 4: 13-17   Aubrey McLeod

REFLECTION:   Alice Shanks

HYMN: Loving Spirit                                                     ©Shirley Murray (AA)

Loving Spirit, Loving Spirit, you have chosen me to be –

You have drawn me to your wonder, you have set your sign on me.

Like a mother, you enfold me, hold my life within your own,

Feed me with your very body, form me of your flesh and bone.

Like a father, you protect me, teach me the discerning eye,

Hoist me up upon your shoulder, let me see the world from high.

Friend and lover, in your closeness I am known and held and blessed;

In your promise is my comfort, in your presence I may rest.

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit, you have chosen me to be

You have drawn me to your wonder, you have set your sign on me.

NEW TESTAMENT READING: Mark 12: 41-44            Gilly Penwell

REFLECTION:  Peggy Cree

HYMN: Take My Gifts                                                   ©Shirley Murray (AA)

Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me,

Gave me light and food and shelter, gave me life and set me free,

Now, because your love has touched me, I have love to give away;

Now the bread of love is rising, loaves of love to multiply!

Take the fruit that I have gathered from the tree your Spirit sowed,

Harvest of your own compassion, juice that makes the wine of God;

Spiced with humour, laced with laughter – flavour of the Jesus life,

Tang of risk and new adventure, taste and zest beyond belief.

Take whatever I can offer – gifts that I have yet to find,

Skills that I am slow to sharpen, talents of the hand and mind,

Things made beautiful for others, in the place where I must be:

Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me.

REFLECTIONS:  Alice and Peggy

PRAYERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE:   Sue Saunders

HYMN: Tell My People (verses 1,4 & 5)

Tell my people I love them; tell my people that I care.

When they feel far away from me, tell my people I am there.

Tell my people I came and died to give them liberty.

As they abide in me, they will be really free!

Tell my people to share their wealth and fight the sin of greed,

Care for the refugee, the hungry they’re to feed.

Tell my people throughout the world to strive for peace today.

Show love for enemies, be servants of the Way.      ©L Barlotti/G Jansen (AA)

WELCOME:

NOTICES & BIRTHDAYS

CALL TO WORSHIP

There is nowhere and no thing in which God is not to be found.

You are there as we wake in the morning.

You are there in our day to day lives.

You are there in our sleeping.

Knowing God means that life can never be empty and meaningless.

God is the very ground of our being,

giving meaning to our everyday world.

God loves us just as we are and

wants us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Thanks be to God.

HYMN: With a Hoot and a Toot

With a hoot and a toot on a pipe or a flute we will praise,

we will worship God; with a hum or a thrum, with a roll on a drum,

we will make him a joyful noise.

Bow a cello that is mellow, sound a trumpet call, blow a horn

and a deep bassoon; every instrument is playing,

with our voices we are saying we rejoice, we are glad in God.

With a flat or a sharp, with a chord on a harp, we will praise,

we will worship God; with a ping on a string, with a choir that can sing, we will make him a joyful noise…

With the clap of a hand, or the sound of a band, we will praise,

we will worship God; with a paper and comb, on an old trombone,

we will make him a joyful noise…

With a peal on a bell, with a cheer or a yell, we will praise, we will worship God; with a bong on a gong, through the words of this song, we will make him a joyful noise…                                          ©Colin Gibson (AA)

SILENCE:

Be still, be silent.

Let God be God.

BIBLE READING:

Introduction to the reading:

Mark 12: 28-34           The great commandments                 Lyn Steele

A daughter’s grumblings and God’s reply.

REFLECTION

HYMN: Kneels at the Feet of His Friends

Kneels at the feet of his friends, silently washes their feet: master who acts as a slave to them…

Yesu, Yesu, fill us with your love,

show us how to serve the neighbours we have from you.

Neighbours are wealthy and poor, varied in colour and race, neighbours are nearby and far away…

These are the ones we should serve, these are the ones we should love; all these are neighbours to us and you…

Loving puts us on our knees, silently washing their feet: this is the way we should love with you…                                T Colvin & people of Ghana (TIS)

OFFERING (together): We offer to you O God ourselves; our money, food, our gifts, time and energy in your service among our community and within the world. Amen.

PREPARATION FOR COMMUNION:

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Dorothy McRae McMahon)

The people of God have a human face, we weep, we wait in hope. We lift our eyes, and stub our toes, we love and struggle, we fail, we stand and always we stand on trembling ground. But God is God and Jesus is the Christ, and the Spirit will lift up our feet.

God is in the centre, God is at our endings. Nothing lies beyond the love of God in Christ.

The children now join us.

THE INVITATION: Jesus Christ invites each one of you to this family meal. In the bread and wine, the sign of Christ’s presence with us, we are united in love with God through Jesus Christ and with one another.

THE ACCEPTANCE:

I come to the table in response to the invitation of Jesus Christ, who came among us and was human like us. I come knowing that I am loved by God. I come seeking healing and wholeness through Jesus Christ who gave the gift of life for us all.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER

SILENCE: Be still, be silent. Remember God so loved the world…

HYMN: Do This In Remembrance of Me (please remain seated)

Do this in remembrance of me, do this in remembrance of me.

As you eat the bread and drink the cup, do this in remembrance of me.

My body broken for you, my body broken for you, and here is my cup, come now take it up and do this in remembrance of me.      ©Val Cash (AA)

THE INSTITUTION OF THE SACRAMENT

DISTRIBUTION: I invite you to come up to the front to the altar. You may kneel or stand. Remain at the altar until the last person is served, then return to your seats.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION:

OFFER THE PEACE OF CHRIST TO ONE ANOTHER:

PRAYERS FOR OTHER PEOPLE & LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: Now Let Us From This Table Rise (Tune: Niagara)

Now let us from this table rise, renewed in body, mind and soul;

With Christ we die and live again, his selfless love has made us whole.

With minds alert, upheld by grace, to spread the Word in speech

and deed we follow in the steps of Christ,

at one with man in hope and need.

To fill each human house with love, it is the sacrament of care; the work that Christ began to do we humbly pledge ourselves to share.

Then give us courage, Father God, to choose again the pilgrim way, and help us to accept with joy the challenge of tomorrow’s day.

(F Kaan WOV450)

BENEDICTION:

Go now and share God’s love with those you meet.

We go having committed ourselves afresh in your service. We go knowing that the God of love goes with us, Jesus Christ being our guide, and the Spirit of God will empower us. May we know the freedom to seek opportunities each new day and serve with compassion, imagination and courage.

CALL TO WORSHIP

We are here to worship our heavenly Father

The love of God welcomes us

The grace of Christ awaits us

The joy of the spirit enfolds us

Don’t come as slaves, come as the truly free

Don’ come as petitioners, come as those who are already heard

Don’t come as interlopers, come as invited guests

Don’t come as outsiders, come as much wanted children

The love of God emboldens us

The grace of Christ redeems us

The joy of the spirit uplifts us

Come as the joyful, come as the eager, come as the thankful

come as the recipients of amazing grace

The love of God overflows our hearts

The grace of Christ liberates our spirits

The joy of the Spirit sings in our minds

HYMN: In Heavenly Love Abiding

In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear;

and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here:

the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid;

But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?

Wherever he may guide me no want shall turn me back,

my shepherd is beside me and nothing can I lack:

his wisdom ever waketh, his sight is never dim,

he knows the way he taketh and I will walk with him.

Green pastures are before me, which yet I have not seen;

bright skies will soon be o’er me where the dark clouds have been:

my hope I cannot measure, my path to life is free;

my Saviour has my treasure, and he will walk with me.

Anna Laetitia Waring (WOV504)

OPENING PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Gillian Cree

HYMN: I’ve got rhythm for Jesus

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

Sweet Spirit, make my life to shine with the glory of the Lord.

O Spirit, make my face to glow with the joy that I feel,

for I know that he’s real.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for Jesus, I’ve got a rhythm for him.

I’ve got a rhythm for him. I’ve got a rhythm for him. ©Heather Campbell

READINGS:

Psalm 104: 1-9, 24-35                        Jeannette Beaumont

1st Corinthians 2:  9-16                       Fern Wakefield

SERMON:  The mind of Christ

HYMN: Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun does his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,

till moons shall wax and wane no more.

For him shall endless prayer be made,

and praises throng to crown his head; his name like sweet perfume shall rise with every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue

dwell on his love with sweetest song; and infant voices shall proclaim their early blessings on his name.

Blessings abound where’er he reigns:

the prisoner leaps to lose his chains: the weary find eternal rest:

And all the sons of want are blest.

Where he displays his healing power,

death and the curse are known no more;

in him the tribes of Adam boast more blessings than their father lost.

Let every creature rise and bring peculiar honours to our King,

angels descend with songs again, and earth repeat the long amen.                                                                          Isaac Watts (WOV136)

THE OFFERING:

Bless these gifts, O God, and bless us as we offer ourselves to serve you in different ways and to praise you in in many voices.

Send your Spirit upon us, so that when we speak the words of your love, people will hear and understand, as they did on that Pentecost day so long ago.

This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord Amen

HYMN: To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,

Who yielded his life an atonement for sin

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

And give him the glory! Great things he has done!

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

To every believer the promise of God!

And every offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see.          F J van Alstyne (WOV85)

PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE

THE LORDS PRAYER

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

HYMN: Soldiers of Christ Arise

Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armour on,

strong in the strength which God supplies through his eternal Son;

strong in the Lord of Hosts, and in his mighty power,

who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.

Stand then in his great might, with all his strength endued;

but take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God;

that, having all things done, and all your conflicts passed,

you may o’ercome through Christ alone, and stand entire at last.

Stand then against your foes, in close and firm array;

legions of wily fiends oppose throughout the evil day:

but meet the sons of night, and mock their vain design,

armed in the arms of heavenly light, of righteousness divine.

Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul;

take every virtue, every grace, and fortify the whole:

in him for ever joined, to battle all proceed;

but arm yourselves with all the mind that was in Christ, your Head.

Charles Wesley (WOV481)

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;

and wither and perish: but nought changeth thee.

CHILDREN’S TALK ~ with Brent

HYMN: Ten thousand reasons  (Brent  to lead with guitar)

Chorus:          Bless the Lord, O my, O my soul

Worship His holy name.

                        Sing like never before, O my soul

 I’ll worship your holy name.

The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning

It’s time to sing your song again,

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me,

Let me be singing when the evening comes.

You’re rich in love and you’re slow to anger,

Your name is great and your heart is kind,

For all your goodness I will keep on singing,

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find.

And on that day when my strength is failing,

The end draws near and my time has come,

Still my soul will sing your praise unending,

Ten thousand years and then forever more.                  ©Matt Redman

SERMON

HYMN: Take My Life and Let It Be (Tune: Nottingham)

Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.

PRAYERS FOR THE PEOPLE: John Shanks

HYMN: Lord of the Dance (WOV 183)

I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun;
and I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth,
at Bethlehem I had my birth:

Dance then, wherever you may be;

I am the Lord of the Dance, said he;
and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he!

I danced for the scribe and the pharisee,
but they would not dance and they wouldn’t follow me.
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John –
they came with me and the dance went on: Chorus…
I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame:
the holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high,
and they left me there on a cross to die: Chorus…
I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black;
it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I’d gone;
but I am the dance and I still go on: Chorus…

They cut me down and I leap up high,
I am the life that’ll never, never die;
I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me:
I am the Lord of the Dance, said He: Chorus…
