WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
Sing to the Lord a new song
Sing to the Lord all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise His name
Proclaim His salvation day after day.
Declare His glory among the nations.
His marvellous deeds among the people.
For great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise.

HYMN: Sing Praise and Thanksgiving
Sing praise and thanksgiving, let all creatures living
now worship their maker with gladness and song;
all glory and honour we come to him bringing:
O praise to the Almighty,
sing praise to our God!

Our lives of his making he brings to their waking;
in darkness he held us in his gracious care,
now into the light we are called from our sleeping:
O praise to the Almighty,
sing praise to our God!

Lord, frame our desiring to do your requiring,
that unto your glory be all that we do;
and where we have faltered, give strength and give healing:
O praise to the Almighty,
sing praise to our God! ? C.A. Gibson & M. Barclay (WOV)

PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

SONG: Jesus Loves the Little Children (x2)
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world.
Every colour, every race, all are covered by his grace.
Jesus loves the little children of the world. C/A

SERMON: True Greatness

A TIME OF QUIET

HYMN: Here I Am, Lord
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin my hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send?

Here I am, Lord, Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, If you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them, they turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone,
I will speak my word to them, whom shall I send?

I the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame,
I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied,
I will give my life to them, whom shall I send?

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

HYMN: Servant Song
Brother, sister, let me serve You
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I might have the grace to
Let you be my servant too.

We are pilgrims on a journey
All together on the road
We are here to help each other,
Walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ light for you,
In the night time of your fear.
I will hold my hand out to you
Speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping
When we laugh I’ll laugh with you.
I will share your joy and sorrow,
Till we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven
We shall find such harmony.
Born of all we’ve known together
Of Christ’s love and agony.

Brother, sister, let me serve You
Let me be as Christ to you
Pray that I might have the grace to
Let you be my servant too.

BLESSING AND THREE-FOLD AMEN (SUNG).

CALL TO WORSHIP:
If we belong to Christ, it is all God’s doing; it is God also who has set his seal upon us and give the Spirit to dwell in our hearts.
It is good to give thanks to the Lord, for God’s love endures for ever.

HYMN: Sing, all creation (Tune: Christe Sanctorum)
Sing all creation, sing to God in gladness: joyously serve him, singing hymns of homage, chanting his praises, come before his presence: praise the Almighty!

Know that our God is Lord of all the ages; he is our maker: we are all his creatures, people he fashioned, sheep he leads to pasture: praise the Almighty!

Enter his temple, ringing out his praises; sing in thanksgiving as you come before him; blessing his bounty, glorify his greatness: praise the Almighty!

Great in his goodness is the Lord we worship; steadfast in his kindness, love that knows no ending; faithful his word is, changeless, everlasting:
praise the Almighty! ©James Quinn (CH4)

PRAYERS OF ADORATION, CONFESSION & SUPPLICATION

HYMN: I Sing a Song of the Saints of God (Tune:Grand Isle)
I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true, who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green; they were all of them saints of God, and I mean, God helping, to be one too.

They loved their Lord so dear, so dear, and his love made them strong; and they followed the right for Jesus’ sake the whole of their good lives long. And one was a soldier, and one was a priest, and was slain by a fierce wild beast; and there’s not any reason, no, not the least, why I shouldn’t be one too.

They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still. The world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, on the street, in the store, in church, by the sea, in the house next door; they are saints of God, whether rich or poor, and I mean to be one too. © L. Scott (CH4)

Job 23: 1-9; 16-17 Bob Cathro
St Mark: 10: 17-31 Deborah Fitchett

SERMON

HYMN: O God, we bear the imprint of your face (Tune: Song 1) O God, we bear the imprint of your face:
the colors of our skin are your design,
and what we have of beauty in our race
as man or woman, you alone define,
who stretched a living fabric on our frame
and gave to each a language and a name.

Where we are torn and pulled apart by hate because our race, our skin is not the same, while we are judged unequal by the state and victims made because we own our name, humanity reduced to little worth, dishonored is your living face on earth.

O God, we share the image of your Son whose flesh and blood are ours, whatever skin, in humanity we find our own, and in his family our proper kin: Christ is the brother we still crucify, his love the language we must learn, or die. ©Shirley Murray (CH4)

PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVING & INTERCESSION

THE PEACE

OFFERING

PRAYER OF DEDICATION & THE LORD’S PRAYER

HYMN: Come and Find the Quiet Centre (Lewis Folk Melody arr J Bell)
Come and find the quiet centre in the crowded life we lead,
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes, that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.
Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
knows our being, touches base,
making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
raising courage when we’re shrinking,
finding scope for faith begun.
In the Spirit let us travel,
open to each other’s pain,
let our loves and fears unravel,
celebrate the space we gain:
there’s a place for deepest dreaming,
there’s a time for heart to care,
in the Spirit’s lively scheming
there is always room to spare! ©Shirley Murray WGRG/Iona (CH4)

NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP: (excerpts Ps 96 W. Brandt)
God is here; God is now
It is time for celebration.
Let us create new songs of praise to our God.
Wherever one turns, God’s presence is apparent.
Let us celebrate God’s presence in our world today.

HYMN: God is Truly Present
God is truly present,
Let us come expectant,
Reverently through Christ approaching.
God has come among us,
So we bring our worship,
Waiting here in awe and stillness.
God we own: God alone –
In the Son revealing
Mercy, truth and healing.

Jesus dwell within me,
Let my mind and spirit
Be the place where you are living.
Loving Lord, draw nearer,
Bringing light and wholeness,
So may I reflect your glory.
Let your will guide me still,
As I bow before you,
Always longing for you.

Come in power and wisdom,
Let your presence fill me;
Take away all things that bind me.
As the warmth of sunshine
Brings the bud to flower,
Let your beauty grow within me.
Lead me on, where you’ve gone,
Jesus friend and leader,
Constant interceder. ©Gerhard Tersteegen

MEDITATION
Be still, be silent before your God.
Say nothing, ask nothing, be still, listen.
God is there beside, within. Give God space.
Be still, be silent.

OFFERING:
Gracious God, with these gifts of money and food as a sign of love, we offer you our love, our time, energy and skills to be used within our everyday. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE WORLD & SUNG LORD’S PRAYER

INVITATION TO COMMUNION: on screen

THE ACCEPTANCE:
We come to the table in response to the invitation of Jesus Christ, who loved, suffered and died for all people. We come seeking renewal and hope that is offered through the risen Christ. We come to show our solidarity with all people of the world in their search for peace and justice.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH:
The people of God have a human face. We laugh, we weep, we wait in hope. We lift our eyes and stub our toes, we love and struggle, we fail, we stand and always we stand on trembling ground. But God is God and Jesus is the Christ and the Spirit will lift our feet. God is at the centre, God is at our endings. Nothing lies beyond the love of God in Christ. (from Echoes of our Journey. McRae-McMahon)

HYMN: Everyday I Will Offer You
Every day I will offer you,
Loving God my heart and mind
Every way I discover you,
In the work your hand has signed;
Help me see I’m your image, and
You have dreamed what I might be –
Every day – in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will look to Christ
And give thanks for wine and bread.
Through the pain and the emptiness
Where your world cries to be fed;
Help me see I can work for change,
And wherever I might be.
Every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy!

Every day I will take your word,
Answer your compassion’s claim,
Celebrate every sign of hope,
Every deed done in your name;
Help me see you are always there,
And your light can shine through me,
Every day in your Spirit,
I’ll find the love and energy! ©Shirley Murray

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

DISTRIBUTION OF ELEMENTS: to the four corners of the world.

OFFER THE PEACE OF CHRIST TO THOSE AROUND YOU.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

BIBLE READING: Matthew 28: 16-20 Joan Macdonald

HYMN: WOV 450 Let us from this Table Rise
Now let us from this table rise renewed in body, mind and soul;
with Christ we die and live again, his selfless love has made us whole.

With minds alert, upheld by grace, to spread the Word in speech and deed, we follow in the steps of Christ, at one with man in hope and need.

To fill each human house with love, it is the sacrament of care;
the work that Christ began to do we humbly pledge ourselves to share.

Then give us courage, Father God, to choose again the pilgrim way,
and help us to accept with joy the challenge of tomorrow’s day. F Kaan.

THE COMMITMENT TO GOD’S WORLD:
We go now, having committed ourselves anew to respond in love in service. May we know the freedom to move into the unknown and untried, see opportunities each new day to serve with love, compassion, imagination and courage. We go, knowing that God will be with us, Jesus Christ will guide us and the spirit of God will lead us along the way. Amen.

Sunday 30 September Celebrating Volunteers

WELCOME AND NOTICES

CALL TO WORSHIP:
In this complex and demanding world, we recognise and honour those who give of themselves to strengthen and enhance community life.
In worship, we focus on the love of God, as it is shown in such people. We give thanks for their gift of themselves, sometimes given at great personal cost; and we hear the voice of God challenging us all with the task of making his love a tangible reality in our city.

Let us worship God.

HYMN: Praise the Lord (tune Austria: WOV58)
Praise the Lord, you heavens adore him
praise him angels in the height
sun and moon, rejoice before him,
praise him all you stars and light.
Praise the Lord for he has spoken,
worlds his mighty voice obeyed:
laws , which never shall be broken,
for their guidance he has made.

Praise the Lord, for he is glorious;
never shall his promise fail:
God has made his saints victorious;
sin and death shall not prevail.
Praise the God of our salvation ;
host on high his power proclaim :
heaven and earth, and all creation,
laud and magnify his name.

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER

STORY-TIME

SONG: One More Step Along the World I Go
One more step along the world I go,
one more step a-long the world I go,
from the old things to the new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Round the corner of the world I turn,
more and more about the world I learn;
all the new things that I see
you’ll be looking at along with me:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

As I travel through the bad and good,
keep me travelling the way I should;
where I see no way to go
you’ll be telling me the way, I know:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Give me courage when the world is rough,
keep me loving though the world is tough,
leap and sing in all I do,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

You are older than the world can be,
you are younger than the life in me,
ever old and ever new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

We hear from some of our Volunteers

HYMN: I, the Lord of Sea and Sky
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in dark and sin
my hand will save.
I, who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night;
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain;
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my Word to them.
Whom shall I send?
Here I am, Lord; is it I, Lord….

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
till their hearts are satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?

Your word alone has power to save us.
Make us your living voice.
Christ, be our light…

Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.
Christ, be our light…

Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.
Christ, be our light…

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
Christ, be our light… © Bernadette Farrell (CH4)

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: This is the day which the Lord has made
Response: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

SONG: This is the Day
This is the day, this is the day
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice, we will rejoice and be glad in it,
And be glad in it
This is the day that the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made.

This is the day, this is the day, when He rose again …..

This is the day, this is the day,
when the Spirit came ….

INTRODUCTION TO THE THEME

OPENING PRAYERS & THE LORD’S PRAYER: Gilly/Lauren

TIME WITH THE CHILDREN ~ Hilary Moore

SONG: Butterfly Song
If I were a butterfly,
I’d thank you, Lord, for giving me wings;
and if I were a robin in a tree,
I’d thank you, Lord, that I could sing;
and if I were a fish in the sea,
I’d wiggle my tail and I’d giggle with glee,
but I just thank you, God, for making me “me”.

For you gave me a heart and you gave me a smile,
you gave me Jesus and you made me your child,
and I just thank you, God, for making me “me”.

If I were an elephant,
I’d thank you, Lord, by raising my trunk;
and if I were a kangaroo,
you know I’d hop right up to you;
and if I were an octopus,
I’d thank you, Lord, for my fine looks,
but I just thank you, God, for making me “me”.

If I were a wiggly worm,
I’d thank you, Lord that I could squirm;
and if I were a crocodile,
I’d thank you, Lord, for my big smile;
and if I were a fuzzy-wuzzy bear,
I’d thank you, Lord, for my fuzzy-wuzzy hair,
but I just thank you, God, for making me “me”. ©Brian Howard (NJS)

Reading 2 – Matthew 18: 12-14 Jessie Robb

REFLECTION

SONG: Christians Are All Kinds of People
Christians are all kinds of people,
They’re average, they’re short, and they’re tall,
From all kinds of backgrounds,
with all kinds of outlooks,
Our gracious God uses them all.
Christians are all kinds of people,
Not even especially good,

But God’s love is mighty, and that is what counts,
With mercy as wide as the sea; It reaches to you and to me.

Christians are all kinds of people.
They’re smilers, they’re grouchers, they’re clowns.
In all kinds of weather, wherever they gather,
You’ll find every kind of them round.
Christians are all kinds of people,
And sometimes all kinds are in me.

God uses all kinds of people,
The black, and the pale and the tan,
New Born and the aged, the fit and disabled,
They all have a part in the plan.
God uses all kinds of people,
With problems, with hang-ups, with scars. ©Stan & Pauline Stewart.

OFFERING

WE GREET ONE ANOTHER

PRAYERS FOR OTHERS William Penwell

ST. FRANCIS: Putting it all into context! Wayne Barton

SONG: Make Me a Channel of your Peace
Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love,
where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you:
O Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love with all my soul!

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there’s despair in life let me bring hope,
where there is darkness, only light,
and where there’s sadness, ever joy:
Make me a channel of your peace:
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life. © Franciscans Communications(NJS)
